Cosmetic Dentistry

Dentistry is concerned with Oral Health, and for many of us, this includes not just a functional dentition, but a great smile too.  We offer a comprehensive range of cosmetic services at our clinic in order to customise treatment to each patient’s specific requirements.  Tooth whitening, porcelain veneers and crowns are all offered along with smile design techniques and CAD-CAM technology.  Feel free to speak with our dentist or any of our staff about these options for more information.

What is it?

Our smile is one of the key ways that we greet the world. But teeth can yellow over time with age, and lifestyle choices. Tooth whitening is a simple, non-invasive method to whiten yellowed teeth and brighten your smile.

The Benefits

Tooth whitening can dramatically improve your smile with no major side effects. It is suitable for almost all patients, and does no harm to the teeth under treatment. Successful whitening can reduce the need for more invasive cosmetic procedures such as veneers.

The Process

At our clinic, there are three types of whitening available. The in-office or chairside whitening, and take-home whitening both treat all the teeth in the aesthetic zone. Internal whitening treats individual teeth which have previously become discoloured after root canal treatment, and helps to reduce the need for crowning or veneering the tooth.
The results from take-home whitening, and chair-side whitening are similar. The main difference is the time it takes, take-home whitening is a slower process that may take a few weeks, whereas chairside whitening usually shows results after 60-90 minutes of treatment. Our dentist will work with you to discover which treatment or combination of treatments is right for you.

The process for take-home whitening is to take an accurate record of the initial shade of your teeth. Customised whitening trays will be made for your teeth, and you will be shown how to place the home whitening gel within the trays. Instructions will be given to avoid trauma to the gums and soft tissues, and on sensitivity management. Our clinic will monitor your progress with a review after a few weeks, and our dentist and staff are always available if you have any questions.

In-office whitening at our clinic is carried out by the dentist. The single visit treatment takes between 60 – 90 minutes to complete.

The system used at our clinic utilises a light at the blue wavelength to activate the whitening gel. Before applying the gel, your cheeks and gums are protected. The lamp is then positioned and the first of four 15 minute sessions begins. During the sessions you can relax or listen to music. In between each session the activated whitening gel is removed, and fresh whitening gel applied.

Some sensitivity may be experience during and after the treatment. We can help you to manage this with pre-whitening desensitising treatments, and analgesics.

The last treatment to be mentioned is the internal whitening which is very effective for discoloured root canal treated teeth. The access previously used to carry out the root canal is reopened. Debris from the pulp chamber is cleared, and any excess filling material is removed. The whitening gel is then placed directly in the cavity, and the whole thing is re-sealed. This process may need to be repeated a few times depending on the depth of discolouration.

What does it cost?

The fees will vary depending upon the treatment or combination of treatments are chosen. We would encourage you to meet with our dentist for a consultation, and discussion of your particular needs and treatment costs.

What is it?

When a tooth is fragile due to a large restoration, broken down or irreversibly discoloured, a crown may be fabricated to protect the tooth from fracture and to restore its function and aesthetics.

The Benefits

Crowning vulnerable or unaesthetic teeth can give peace of mind, and restore your smile. They are stronger than the alternative inlays, onlays and veneers, and are a great treatment choice where appropriate. Crowns over root canal treated teeth help to protect the root canal treatment and all the tooth to be functional again. With beautiful porcelain, zirconia and e-max options your crown will not just be functional but aesthetic too.

The Process

Once it is determined that you need a crown, having been given all your options, pros, cons, risks and costs, Dr Sherina will take a small x-ray to ensure the tooth to be crowned is sound. If the x-ray is fine, then the treatment will proceed.

Before starting, you may require local anaesthetic. This is numbing for just the tooth or area in question. Our clinic always applies a surface numbing gel before giving the local anaesthetic injection to give almost pain free analgesia.

If you have any concerns regarding analgesia, please do let us know so that we can make the experience as anxiety free as possible.

Our dentist will take a small impression of your tooth. She will then trim the tooth just enough so that there is space for the material of the crown to be placed. An impression is taken of the tooth to be crowned and the opposing teeth. This will be sent to the lab along with the tooth shading instructions.

A temporary crown will be made and cemented and the occlusion is checked.
Upon return of the crown from the lab, your temporary crown will be removed, and the new crown will be tried. If the fit is good, and you are happy with the fit and appearance, we will cement the crown. Your bite will be checked, and adjusted if necessary.

What does it cost?

Fees for crowns vary depending upon choice of material. We would encourage you to meet with our dentist for a consultation, and discussion of your particular needs and treatment costs.

What is it?

When the tooth is structurally sound, but discoloured or mis-shapen, porcelain veneers can be made to restore and even cosmetically improve your teeth.

Porcelain veneers are designed to cover the front surface of teeth.  They are very thin, and with improving materials we are able to give a lovely and natural finish.

The Benefits

If your teeth are structurally sound, but discoloured, chipped or slightly misshapen, veneers may be the perfect solution.  They require less tooth surface removal than crowns, and can disguise many problems including spacing and mild mal-alignments.  The other big advantage of veneers is the speed of the treatment, you could see your new smile within weeks.

The Process

When embarking on aesthetic treatments, our dentist always creates a mock up of the intended result first. This is very important, because some changes can only really be understood when seen in 3D.  If the treatment is going to be quite dramatic, you may also be asked to wear a provisional version first, to confirm the treatment choice, and also to allow any minor adjustments to be made before the final veneers are fabricated.

The teeth to be veneered are prepared under local anaesthetic.  This is numbing for just the tooth or area in question.  Our clinic always applies a surface numbing gel before giving the local anaesthetic injection to give almost pain free analgesia.

If you have any concerns regarding analgesia, please do let us know so that we can make the experience as anxiety free as possible.

Preparation involves trimming the surface of the teeth.  Impressions are then taken, and temporary veneers fabricated.  When the lab returns your final porcelain veneers, your temporaries will be removed, and the porcelain will be bonded to the tooth using porcelain bonding techniques.
